Chiayi Sound Project

Started as a sound archive in 2008-2009 in the southern region of Chiayi, Taiwan. Reborn in 2012 as an exhibition. Initiated by Yannick Dauby and Yen-Ting Hsu, joined later by Wan-Shuen Tsai. (please pay attention to the chronology of the articles published below)

The exhibition "Revitalization of Chiayi Sound Project" shown at TheCube in 2012 got the great chance to have been presented in two other places: Museum Of Contemporary Art (MOCA) and Taipei Fine Arts Museum (TFAM) in 2013.

Three years after the "Chiayi Sound Project" was completed, Yannick Dauby, Yen-Ting Hsu and Wan-Shuen Tsai extracted some sounds from the vast field recordings archive to construct an aural environment presented at TheCube (Taipei, Taiwan), an exhibition space curated by Amy Cheng and Jeph Lo. August-October 2012.

In parallel to the exhibition "Revitalization of Chiayi Sound Project" (TheCube, Taipei, 2012), we decided to release a selection of the archive in the form of a double album, available online. Follow the link and download this selection of field recordings.

The project entered the second phase. We were gathering more sounds and encountered many unusual situations.

Invited to do some audio recordings and to contribute to the building of a sound archive about and in the coastal region of Chiayi, I was expecting a lot for my first stay, this month of December 2008. Here are my notes from the field.

A short introduction about Chiayi Sound Project, which started as a field recording work by Yannick Dauby and Yen-Ting Hsu.
