Yannick : Ok, if we abandon this story about aesthetics, and we keep just this loop of producing/listening. It may be quite close to composing in a way. But there is a big difference when I am recording and listening a bird singing, I am paying attention to his loop. Do you have this kind of feeling while recording in the field, for example with a chorus of frogs ?
Francisco : Well, when you are recording in the field are you listening to what is being recorded, are you monitoring ?
Yannick : Yes...
Francisco : I never do that.
Yannick : Really ?
Francisco : Never. I will just leave the microphone and move away. I move like a hundred meters away or two hundred meters aways. I am never there.
Yannick : Why ?
Francisco : There are many reasons. Or a few of very important reasons. First thing. Of course I choose a location, carefully. I look and I check, I choose a location that seems to be interesting, sounds good or whatever, and then I leave it there, right ? If I am listening during the recording then it will be struck in my memory. Even more intensely. Then later when I'll take thoses recording in the studio and I will listen to them then it will be really much more pressionning my memory of what it was, what was happening around, visually and everything. So I try to detach from that gathering of sounds. And there is another very important reason in nature, which is when you are around, of course there are so many things that won't show up, you know. Birds... It's actually very interesting just to leave a recording equipment while you're not there, because you may hear, very incredible things.
Yannick : When I am recording a bird or a mammals, I am very much like trapped in his loop. Following what he's producing. But when I am recording frogs, and factories, I will also leave my equipment, but with individual animals, I'll prefer be there.
Francisco : Well, I guess there is a big difference between those types of things because with factories or groups of frogs there is like very complex constant environments that won't change in terms of... This is constant change but it is always the same pattern, while if you are following a bird or an animal there will be occasion of things that won't happen again. But I don't know your ressources for following an animal you know, I am not sure... I mean it sounds good to me, but I never do that or very very rarely in specific occasions...
